A dental crown replacement is usually performed for cosmetic reasons and oftentimes to preserve the health of the tooth after the crown becomes worn or gum tissue recedes. If dental decay develops at the margins of a crown, it can rapidly advance under the crown, destroying the supporting structure of the crown. To preserve the tooth, a new crown may be recommended.
Each time you are examined at our Boynton Beach office, Dr. Jamie J. Alexander notes the condition of your crowns and will inform you if you need a dental crown replacement.
The life of a dental crown depends on your oral health, diet and eating habits, daily oral hygiene, regular dental care, and the materials used to make the crown. All-porcelain and porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns typically last five to 15 years. A metal crown may last up to 20 years or longer. Zirconia crowns and gold crowns might last a lifetime.
We recommend our patients to pay particular attention when brushing and flossing around crown margins. This helps prolong your tooth’s health and overall longevity of your crown.
