Cosmetic dentistry offers a myriad of treatments to enhance your smile. Among these are dental veneers. Veneers cover imperfections in your teeth to give your smile a whole new look that’s attractive and pleasing. At the office of Jamie J. Alexander DDS, PA, we offer upper and lower teeth veneers to our patients in Boynton Beach and Ocean Ridge, Florida. Here are some questions we’re commonly asked about veneer treatment.
Veneers are thin, custom-crafted porcelain coverings that are fixed to the outside of your teeth to improve their appearance. They’re ideal for covering chipped, cracked, discolored, or misshapen teeth that detract from your smile’s esthetics. With veneers, your smile can look smooth and unblemished.
Yes! We can place veneers on both your upper and lower teeth to improve the quality of your smile. Veneers are mainly used as a cosmetic enhancer, although they can protect chipped and cracked teeth from future damage. They work best on teeth that are visible when you talk or smile, giving them a more pleasing appearance.
We’ll schedule a consultation so Dr. Alexander can examine your teeth and determine if veneers can resolve your smile issues. We’ll discuss the veneer process and what to expect, and plan your treatment together to achieve the results you desire. Then we’ll prep the teeth for treatment by removing a thin layer of enamel to make room for your veneers. Afterward, impressions are taken and sent to a lab where custom veneers are made. Since fabricating porcelain veneers can take a week or two, we’ll place temporary veneers. When your custom veneers are ready, you’ll come back to our office to have them permanently cemented in place.
To ease pain or sensitivity, Dr. Alexander can use a mild anesthetic for your procedure. Rest assured, we’ll keep you as comfortable as possible for this treatment.
Although veneers are permanently attached to your teeth, they won’t last forever. Eventually, they’ll wear down and need to be replaced. With good oral care, however, porcelain veneers can last 15 to 20 years. Because tooth enamel is removed during veneer treatment and can’t be replaced, you’ll need to repeat the veneer process or choose a different cosmetic treatment for your teeth when it’s time to replace your veneers.
Good oral hygiene will keep your veneers in good shape over the long haul. Brush your teeth twice a day with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss regularly. Avoid foods and drinks that could stain your teeth, and cut hard foods into small pieces to avoid chipping the veneers.
