What to Know Before You Whiten
Process + how whitening works
● Whitening toothpaste – there are larger abrasive particles that tend to scrub off not just the stains, but the enamel causing sensitivity
● Whitening gels/strips – it opens up the pores, extracting the stains and minerals, causing dehydration of the teeth, also causing sensitivity
● There is a threshold of how white your teeth can get depending on the color of your enamel
TIP:
● Use a toothpaste for sensitivity a week before starting and during the whitening process
● ALWAYS brush your teeth before using any whitening product
● If sensitivity occurs, reduce frequency to every other day, or reduce time
Whitening OTC vs In-office
Over the Counter:
● Lower strength – which will take longer to whiten, but reduces sensitivity
● Easier to get on gums that may cause irritation
In-office Gel
● Higher strength and better accuracy with customized tray, preventing gum irritation
